Winter Disc Golf in Fucking Cleveland

Winter Disc Golf in Fucking Cleveland

On Saturday, January 17, 2009, Rob convinced Andy that it'd be a good idea to go out to Sims Park, our local disc golf course, for a round. Under normal conditions, Sims Park is a good mix of mostly short to mid-range holes, with a picturesque front 9 with some great views of Lake Erie (into which one of our friends from hole 2 once threw a fantastically errant green XL that was once purchased at a Des Moines grocery store, but which for most throwers isn't much of a water hazard), a series of wooded holes that allow for a wide variety of shots to be used, and some open but still challenging holes on the back 9. For a few weeks this past summer, holes 19-21 showed up, appearing to be permanent, then disappeared. Since Rob and Andy don't often hang with the local, somewhat choady disc golf crowd, aside from the occasional Monday scramble, so no word as to why. The locals, headed by the somewhat shady little owner of Scotti's Italian Eatery (which also has a full-on disc golf pro shop in the also shady upstairs), weren't out on this fine Cleveland day to ask.

The following images fail to convey the extreme fucking cold of this day. There was more than one disgruntled reference to those other jags who likely were enjoying a round in shorts & T-shirts on this same day during the round, but Rob and Andy refused to let Cleveland bring them down.

Their camera, however, did. Images from holes 4 through 18 mysteriously disappeared...

Here we see Rob teeing off, full of hope and the promise of a decent round, on hole 1. The hole is past the group of trees on the right side; usually a hammer for Rob, a forehand for Andy. Today, mixed results.

Andy isn't taking a leak here, as it might seem, he's just thrown in toward hole 1, a frozen Lake Erie in the background. If you look close, you can see the disc with the tree branches in the background, but you won't see a sailboat.

Some Crazy Fucked-up Disc Golf Ninja gets into some Zen before hole 2.

This is one hard core disc golfer. In warmer months, the beach behind Rob there is functional, but not particularly popular, at least for attractive people.

Rob tees off on hole 2. The hole is sharply off to the right of the fairway, kind of not where Rob is facing. His forehand wound up in the woods to the left. There was some cursing.

Fuckin' A.

Rob has par on his mind.

Nope.

Rob tees off on hole 3, disc in mid-flight. The basket lies next to the woods that line the left side of the fairway, and Rob has made some pin-high drop-in twos on this hole before. Andy, for some reason, tries to turn over forehands on this one, with mixed results.

This must be around the time our mysterious camera difficulties must have started, as there's no photos of Andy's shot here, or of any holes from here on out. However, you're really not missing anything.

But we can leave you with these.
